County 4-H Youth Building Awards and Activities.

The 4-H youth building at the Steuben County
Fair was full of great exhibits in the project areas of
vegetables, cut flowers and plants, foods, food preservation,
clothing, home environment, fine arts and crafts, photography,
woodworking, small and large shop projects, electrical
and farm crops.
The 4-H members that were chosen for the top awards in
the 4-H Youth Building for the 2009 Steuben County Fair
were:
Best of Show: Clothing: Senior, Karli Mulford, Willing
Workers; Junior: Kylie Harvey, Country Bunch. Foods: Megan
Cratsley, 4-Clovers -carrot drop cookies; Jill DeWispelaere,
Windy Hill- apple pie; Bethany Draper, Independent- coffee
cloud cake; Shannon Draper, Independent -fruit cake; Lucas
Gilson, Willing Workers -wheat crescent rolls, chocolate
peppermint scones; Jonathan Gritzmacher, 4-Clovers -decorated
cake; Karli Mulford, Willing Workers - blueberry coffee
cake; Elizabeth Robinson, Independent-apricot coconut
cookies; Megan Rosko, Outsiders -muffins; Denise Schubmehl,
Willing Workers - brained peppery cheese rolls, whole
wheat yeast rolls; Samantha Towner, Willing Workers- Italian
almond cookies. Home Environment: Austin Harvey, Country
Bunch- quilt. Electrical: Arielle Wilcox, 4-Clovers –
electrical cord. Woodworking: Rebecca Johnson, Hill and
Valley -rocking chair.
These Teen Assistants helped the judges
and arranged the exhibits: Gabriel Barone, Megan Cratsley,
Jill DeWispelaere, Bethany Draper, Lindsay Draper, Jonathan
Gritzmacher, Karli Mulford, Meiling Norfolk, Brett Rosko,
Megan Rosko, Molly Smith.
On Youth Days at the fair, there were on-going
activities in the 4-H youth building. Amber Tietje, the
4-H Summer Assistant’s activity involved chicks
that she hatched in an incubator at the fair. 4-Hers Lindsay,
Draper, Bethany Draper and Michaela Kinney had interactive
activities from the “Ag In the Classroom”
curriculum for young fairgoers. The activities were: The
Hatch-it, Dirty Dirt-Super-Soil and Initials Seed Germination.
They will also be doing these activities at the Steuben
County Booth at the NYS Fair. Samantha Towner, Meiling
Norfolk, and Becky Bidlack gave their District Public
Presentations. Becky will be representing Steuben County
at the State Public Presentation Event on September 2
at the NYS Fair. Samantha Towner did a “Produced
in New York” Silent Presentation “Apple Flower
Snack.” Samantha Towner also led a Make It Take
It activity, letting those interested make a no mess tie
dye scarf.
Contests held during the week included: Veggie Art Contest.
Each contestant planned a sculpture made from locally
grown vegetables and had 20 minutes to assemble it before
being judged. The results were displayed for all to view.
Lindsey Draper’s was chosen for state fair. Cake
Decorating Contest: Each brought a basic frosted cake
or giant cookie and decorated it in a 20minute time frame.
The results were judged. The winners of the “Most
Creative Cake”, sponsored by the Gritzmacher Family
were: Cloverbud, Hannah Stewart; Junior, Ariel Wilcox;
and Senior, Rachael Walters. Creative Place Setting Contest:
Each participant chooses a theme and menu then brings
a table setting that reflects this. The themes varied
from John Deere to tea parties. Chosen for State Fair:
Lindsay Draper with a miniature tea party and Jonathan
Gritzmacher with a Nascar Racing Theme. Flower Arranging
Contest: Each person arranged a centerpiece using an assortment
of flowers. Tom Cortwright from Aaah Flowers by Cortwright
gave tips for arranging as he judged the arrangements.
Everyone was a winner for all were able to take their
arrangements home to enjoy.
